Sleep Tight the Bed Bugs are Back... And They Want You

Whether you know it or not, we are in the biggest bed bug epidemic that New York has ever seen. Cimex lectularious popularly know as bed bugs, chinch bugs or chinches in some neighborhoods have increased as much as 660 percent. Even me being in the pest control world have seen the serious increase in calls. I notice that a lot of the customers seem to have the wrong idea when it comes to bedbugs such as I throw out the bed and they're gone. Wrong! The bed bugs are crack and crevice creatures that live in beds, dressers, night tables closets, walls, clothing and moldings. Actually anywhere a business card can fit so can they.  There Called Bed Bugs Because they eat on the bed not because they live there.  

In case you thought you can go to your local hardware store or Home Depot to get rid of these bugs your in for a rude awakening. Bed bugs in NYC are 226 times more resistant to pesticide that in any other state.  Due to the do it yourselfer, the failure to treat because of embarrasment and the real lack of knowledge when it comes to treating this pest. And don’t forget  if your neighbors have it, then you're on the menu too.

We have a different approach to treating bed bugs that not only involve pesticides but  using dry steaming, It sounds like an oxymoron but it’s a process that involves using less water and more pressure to not only kill the bed bug but to force them out of hiding.

We steam furniture, walls, doors, window frames and any crack and crevice where the might be hiding, several pesticides working together a kamikaze if you will and a dust that goes behind the wall via electrical circuits, light circuits and any existing holes in the walls. You can go online and google New York vs Bedbugs  and get more info on the going on with bed bugs in the city. Bedbug complaints to the city's 311 hotline grew from 10,509 in 2006 to 22,218 last year according to the city of NY and that’s just the people who call 311 don’t forget the people that do call exterminators and the do it yourselfers. 

Did you know that mattress manufacturers are refurbishing thrown out bed bug infested mattresses and reselling them labeled new materials?

 The Bloomberg administration tried to even block the sale of these refurbished mattreses but failed. The way they get away with it is: they do use new materials in the covering so they're not lying when the say new materials. The bed is old and used,sometimes many times over.

Picking up furniture in the street is a NO NO!!  It's on the street for a reason.  Sometimes cheap things come out to be more expensive. Also avoid used furniture on Craigslist.

From Brooklyn to South Hampton they're everywhere, take my word for it. A popular myth is that bed bugs come because people are dirty. Not true. I have walked into homes that for lack of a better word were perfect and they still had an infestation.  I once helped throw out a Ralph Lauren mattress. I didn't even know he made mattresses. The Steaming Process Explained

The Steamer

We use a dry steam machine. It sounds like an oxymoron but it uses more heat and less water to generate 275 degrees of dry steam. We will heat up walls, dressers, night tables, couches , doors, chairs, any and all furniture and also include quarter rounds, window frames or anywhere in the room where a crack or crevice might exist.

The process has two functions:

• 1) To kill the bedbug
• 2) To force them out of hiding.

Imagine if you are taking a gallon of water, to represent the pesticide, and pouring it on a couch. There is no way that you get to every spot on the couch and to every crack and crevice. There are just too many layers. Now use the same principle and let’s use a quart of steam at 275 degrees. Literally, we inject the wand in one side of the couch and it shoots out at the other side getting into every crack, every crevice, and every fold, literally going into every part of the couch freeing the couch of bedbugs without destroying it or doing any damage to the couch. Generally the couch looks like it was just cleaned. Actually no pest can survive, including dust mites.

The Chemicals

In a Compressed air sprayer First, we use a contact killer which does what it says, it kills on contact. Second, we use a long term residual pesticide that will continue to kill long after we’re gone. The third chemical in our kamikaze is an IGR which stands for insect growth regulator. It stops their hunger, growth and reproduction. Last, but certainly not least, we use a synergist that bonds with

The pesticide and does two things.

• 1) Doesn’t allow the bedbugs to have any natural defense to pesticide and
• 2) Doesn’t allow the pesticide to break down as quickly as it would without it.

The Dust

We use a silica base pyrethrum dust that pierces their skin and turns them off like a light switch. We will pump this powder inside electrical sockets, light sockets or any existing holes in the wall. Electrical circuitry such as televisions, stereos, and alarm clocks will also be powdered inside . The Silica base pyrethrum does not do any damage to the circuitry and protects it from infection.

The Cover

If needed, we will also encase mattresses in bedbug proof liners and also encase the box springs. At additional Costs

We will seal any crack and crevice using industrial strength silicone in any area we feel bedbugs are coming from and generally prevent any bug from entering the room from inside the walls.At Additional Costs.
