Entomology is the science of insects. In other words, it tells us the scientific information about all kinds of insects on the planet. Now you must be thinking why do we need to have a separate branch of science for something so tiny and significant for us? Well, if you think that insects are only there to annoy us and are of any less significance than any other kind of life on the planet, then you have mistaken.
There are about some 1.3 million known species of insects in the world right now and each of them plays an essential and unique role in our eco-system. Insects account for about two-thirds of all the known organisms on earth. That means that two out of 3 living things in this world are insects. Entomology is an extension of biology and is regarded as one of its most significance sub-types.
Entomology serves numerous purposes in our society. For most scientists, entomology is something that they can use to understand anything about the world. Following are some of the main purpose of entomology:
Entomology is of two types – Normal Entomology and Forensic Entomology. Normal entomology includes normal scientific studies like the ones explained above. Forensic Entomology, on the other hand, is used in the forensic investigations. Forensic experts study the bugs present at a homicide scene to determine the time at which the crime was committed.

Not all bugs are creepy and ugly
But the conservation of insects and forensic investigation are not the only purposes for entomology. It is also used to eliminate unnecessary infestation of various insects from the places where they can pose a threat or cause discomfort to other animals or human beings.
Entomology is a huge factor when it comes to extermination of various insects like ants, termites, bed bugs, mosquitoes, flies etc. Insects are not like animals which we can trap or catch with the help of few tools. Their small size and sheer number makes it very difficult for humans to get rid of them. Since they are so small, they can hide in smallest of spaces in the house like cracks in walls or cabinets, inside old vessels or jars, in the upholstery, stored food and clothes, our bed and other furniture – you name the place and we can tell you an insect that can survive in it. Insects are also very fast breeders. This means that, if not eliminated all at once, the remaining ones can multiply to the previous level in no time.
Entomology provides us the right way to eliminate such infestation in the most effective yet humane manner. Scientists research to find out which method can be used to eliminate a particular species of insects. Scientists conduct tests and experiments to determine which chemical kills the bug in the most efficient and effective method.
Entomology has made lives of normal people much easier. It gave us a way to get rid of the pesky and often harmful insects. Without this science, we would have to grope in the dark in our attempts to get rid of bugs from our house. Thanks to entomology, now we can use the right method to exterminate each and every kind of insect that’s infesting our home.
But while eliminating, we must always make sure that we use a safe method. The chemical or gas should not only be safe for humans, but should also kill the pests instantly. After all, science also tells us to be kind and humane to every living thing in the world.
