Entomology: Science of Insects

Entomology is the science of insects. In other words, it tells us the scientific information about all kinds of insects on the planet. Now you must be thinking why do we need to have a separate branch of science for something so tiny and significant for us? Well, if you think that insects are only there to annoy us and are of any less significance than any other kind of life on the planet, then you have mistaken.

There are about some 1.3 million known species of insects in the world right now and each of them plays an essential and unique role in our eco-system. Insects account for about two-thirds of all the known organisms on earth. That means that two out of 3 living things in this world are insects. Entomology is an extension of biology and is regarded as one of its most significance sub-types.

Purpose of Entomology:

Entomology serves numerous purposes in our society. For most scientists, entomology is something that they can use to understand anything about the world. Following are some of the main purpose of entomology:

  • Discovering Mother Earth: Entomology is best for those who want to discover the hidden secrets of life on earth. We all stay so entrapped in our day to day lives to realize what important part insects play in our lives. They are at the lowest levels of food chains, but without them, the upper levels, including the one that includes humans will fail to exist. Insects enable growth of flowers, plants, crops and trees through pollination. They are also food for many significant animals and birds and play a huge role in keeping our eco-system in best shape.
  • Besides understanding the nature, Entomology is also used in various different fields of science.
  • Significance to the world: Scientists research about insects to find out their function in the nature and what significance they hold to our world. They also want to know about the effects of their existence on other species. There are a number of insects in the world which are essential for the existence of a number of other animals without which the entire balance of nature will get disrupted.
  • Disease Control: Entomology also includes various studies about how insects carry bacteria and germs from one place to another. Many insects like mosquitoes and flies carry certain bacteria and traces of diseases which can make other animals including human sick. The female anopheles mosquito has been found to spread malaria, similarly another kind of mosquito spreads dengue and Chicken Gunia kinds of diseases. Before scientists made these discoveries in the world of entomology, people were completely clueless about the causes and treatment of such diseases. Entomology has enabled us to understand the causes of various infections and diseases.
  • Learning Their Mechanism: Scientists which specialize in entomology also use research done on insects to understand the physics of flying and landing. The unusual reflex of certain insects helps scientists understand how a brain works.
  • Genetics: Entomologists also use various insects such as the fruit fly to study genetics. They use their DNA patterns to understand its mechanism. They also study the rules of evolution and science of heredity in a species. Insects are also used in behavioural study and physiology of living things on this planet.

Entomology is of two types – Normal Entomology and Forensic Entomology. Normal entomology includes normal scientific studies like the ones explained above. Forensic Entomology, on the other hand, is used in the forensic investigations. Forensic experts study the bugs present at a homicide scene to determine the time at which the crime was committed.

But the conservation of insects and forensic investigation are not the only purposes for entomology. It is also used to eliminate unnecessary infestation of various insects from the places where they can pose a threat or cause discomfort to other animals or human beings.

Entomology is a huge factor when it comes to extermination of various insects like ants, termites, bed bugs, mosquitoes, flies etc. Insects are not like animals which we can trap or catch with the help of few tools. Their small size and sheer number makes it very difficult for humans to get rid of them. Since they are so small, they can hide in smallest of spaces in the house like cracks in walls or cabinets, inside old vessels or jars, in the upholstery, stored food and clothes, our bed and other furniture – you name the place and we can tell you an insect that can survive in it. Insects are also very fast breeders. This means that, if not eliminated all at once, the remaining ones can multiply to the previous level in no time.

Entomology provides us the right way to eliminate such infestation in the most effective yet humane manner. Scientists research to find out which method can be used to eliminate a particular species of insects. Scientists conduct tests and experiments to determine which chemical kills the bug in the most efficient and effective method.

Entomology has made lives of normal people much easier. It gave us a way to get rid of the pesky and often harmful insects. Without this science, we would have to grope in the dark in our attempts to get rid of bugs from our house. Thanks to entomology, now we can use the right method to exterminate each and every kind of insect that’s infesting our home.

But while eliminating, we must always make sure that we use a safe method. The chemical or gas should not only be safe for humans, but should also kill the pests instantly. After all, science also tells us to be kind and humane to every living thing in the world.
